Sacrament of Reconciliation

Wednesdays & Saturdays at 6:30-6:50 pm. or by appointment.

Preparing for the Sacrament in a simplified way

1.   Prepare with personal prayer.  Ask God to show you the areas in your life that need forgiveness and conversion.  You might consider these three basic relationships:    (or use any other examination of conscience)

  • Your relationship with God and God’s community, the church.

  • Your relationship with family, friends and the larger community.

  • Your relationship with yourself as a child of God.  Do you live up to your baptismal call and live as a person with integrity?

2.   When you approach the priest, you may begin the sacrament with these (or similar words):

“Bless me Father for I have sinned, it has been ____ (weeks/months/years) since my last confession."

3.   The priest will welcome you.

4.    Mention to the priest what you think you need to ask for forgiveness.  If you are unsure, mention to the priest that you are unsure of what to say.  He will guide you.

5.   When you are finished, end with a prayer of sorrow for your sins.  The following is one format but if you know another, please pray what you are most familiar with.  You may choose to pray the prayer of contrition spontaneously or in another language.  Again, whatever way is easiest and most meaningful for you.

“O my God, I am sorry for all my sins because I have offended you.  I know I should love you above all things.  Help me to do penance, to do better, and to avoid anything that might lead me to sin.  Amen.”

  6.   The priest will suggest a penance, then will pray the prayer of absolution.
